There are some places you visit once.
Then there are places that quietly become family traditions.
Ten years ago, eight families from across the UK booked what we thought would be a one-off holiday together. Ten years later, we’re still returning to White Heron Estate in Herefordshire every summer.
Our annual week-long holiday spans three generations. From newborn babies to grandparents in their late seventies, we’ve watched our family grow up here. Babies have taken their first steps on the lawn, children have learnt to swim in the pool, and teenagers now organise fiercely competitive family tournaments!
After ten years of returning, I think it’s safe to say we’ve found one of the best large group holiday houses in the UK.

Why We Keep Coming Back to White Heron Estates, Herefordshire
Family life gets busier every year.
Finding one week when everyone is free is difficult enough.
Finding somewhere that genuinely works for everyone once you’ve found a date?
That’s even harder.
White Heron Estate somehow manages to solve that problem.
From the moment you approach the 700-acre Wittern Estate, you know you are heading somewhere special. You will drive up a tree lined lane, passing meadows and orchards on the way.
Passing the Padel court, as you arrive at the converted Victorian stable-yard made up of 4 different properties.
Whether your group is made up of toddlers, teenagers, grandparents or a mixture of all three, there’s always something for everyone.
The facilities are impressive.
A heated swimming pool.
A hot tub.
Padel and squash courts.
Beautiful countryside.
But what keeps bringing us back isn’t the facilities.
Some of our favourite memories have nothing to do with the property itself.
They’re the long walks through the orchards, where conversations flow.
They’re the themed BBQ nights where everyone is given a job—whether that’s flipping steaks, chopping salads or being in charge of the music.
They’re the games afternoons that start with good intentions and somehow always end with a passionate discussion of the rules!
Those are the moments that become family stories.
And, for us, that’s why we keep coming back.
Space to Be Together… and Apart!
One thing that’s often overlooked when booking a family holiday house is just how important space becomes.
Not everyone wants to spend every minute together.
At White Heron Estate, that’s never been a problem.
There are plenty of communal areas where everyone naturally gathers, but there are also quiet corners where you can escape with a book, enjoy a morning coffee or take five minutes to yourself.
I think that’s one of the reasons our weeks here work so well.
Even with more than twenty of us staying in one house, it never feels crowded.
The Main House; The Colloquy, sleeps 23 people. It boasts 4 kitchens, 3 living areas, a grand piano, table football, tennis table, 3 large dining areas inside and out. With this amount of space, each mealtime feels different, and we are never bored of repeating the same day twice!
Throughout the house, the meeting spaces reflect the history of the building; named The Parley, Clock View, The Tack Room and The Discourse.
A Unique Touch
White Heron Estate sits within a working farm that supplies blackcurrants for Ribena. The estate also produces its own award-winning British Cassis, and every stay begins with a bottle waiting in your welcome hamper—a lovely touch that always makes the start of our holiday feel extra special.
The Perfect Base for Every Occasion
Although we’ve always visited as a large family, I can easily imagine this being the perfect setting for so many different occasions.

With accommodation for groups ranging from four to over sixty people, it’s amazingly versatile.
If you are staying for a weekend, in all honesty, you may not find time to leave, but in case you do want to venture out, there are lots of day trips within easy driving distance from the estate. I will be documenting these in an upcoming blog so watch this space!
What’s changed over the years?
One of the things we’ve enjoyed most is seeing the estate evolve alongside our family.
Since we have been coming, White Heron Estates have invested in the grounds to offer guests extra experiences, including but not limited to wine tastings and e-bike experiences.
This year’s addition of a Padel court has certainly been very welcome.
It is worth noting that these experiences are charged at an additional rate, and may need booking before you arrive to ensure availability.
A lot of our party have to dip in and out of work while we stay here, and up until this year have had some difficulty ensuring steady WiFi. However, this year, the estate team have upgraded the WiFi, ensuring the whole house has access to reliable WiFi. (Some spots better than others!)
The team at White Heron Estate have always been very attentive to our requests, often answering our queries immediately, or within 24 hours.
Final Thoughts
There are plenty of large holiday houses in the UK.
Some may be more luxurious.
Some may be more modern.
Some might even have better facilities.
But very few become part of your family’s traditions.
After ten years, White Heron Estate has become exactly that for us.
